In Greek legends and mythology the daffodil represents the return of springtime after Persephone's release and the vain Narcissus gazing at his reflection. Daffodils symbolize beginnings, hope, resurrection and vanity.

After the cultivation of daffodils in Europe in the early 1600s they represented wealth and prosperity. Daffodils have represented varying things to people in other times.

Daffodils have been used as aphrodisiacs and to cure baldness. Daffodils were associated with death to ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Daffodil superstitions have also been relayed through time. It is believed that if you step on a daffodil flower bed that will bring you bad luck. On the other hand if you try not to step on a daffodil you will earn good luck. When you give daffodils to people you should give them a bouquet, not just one daffodil. If you give someone just one daffodil that may also cause them to have bad luck. If you give them a bouquet of daffodils that will create good luck for them.

Pointing at daffodils may be bad luck for the cheery flowers. In the United States in the northern state of Maine, one daffodil superstition is that if someone

points at a daffodil with their index finger that may keep the flower from blooming.

Daffodils are believed to bring good luck. In China the daffodils that are grown to bloom for the Chinese New Year signify good fortune for the next year. Sightings of daffodils are believed to bring good fortune. According to traditional Welsh beliefs, the first sight of a daffodil in spring will bring luck and money.

Daffodils may also warn of death. Witnessing the drooping or wilting of daffodils might portend death. During the Middle Ages seeing a daffodil droop or wilt while watching the daffodil was considered a warning of death or a death omen.

In mythology daffodils are associated with sadness, vanity and lost love. Giving a daffodil to a bride on her wedding day could bring her bad luck because the daffodil is associated with sadness, problems of Narcissus and Echo, narcissism and unrequited love.

Daffodils represent beginnings, happiness and love. When people give daffodils to other people they convey flower messages. Giving a daffodil to the one you love tells them that their sunny smile brightens your day and means you like them and want them to be happy. When a woman gives a daffodil to a man that represents her awareness of his considerate chivalrous behavior and means she likes and appreciates him. Giving a daffodil to your partner is a sign of love, hope and happiness combined with respect.
